Termites have been around for over 250 million years. They are social insects and live in colonies which are usually located in the ground or in wood.
Subterranean termites are the most destructive kind of termite. They can eat a lot of wood and they can cause a lot of expensive damage to a house! They can destroy building foundations, wooden support beams, plastic plumbing pipes, sub-flooring, insulation … even swimming pool liners and filtration systems!
Termites can also injure or destroy living trees and shrubs. They can also feed off of multiple houses.
Studies have shown there can be up to 56 colonies per acre. The average termite colony consumes up to 77 pounds of wood a year. On average, a colony consists of 250,000 to 3 million termites. When a colony comes to its full maturity and peak (which is about 2 years) a swarm occurs.
Out of that swarm a new queen emerges and starts a new colony. The presence of the swarm or their shed wings inside the building indicates an infestation. Another indication is the presence of mud or shelter tubes extending from the ground to woodwork or on foundation walls, most of the time you won’t see this unless there is construction being done to the home.
Hundreds of Termites!
